Health & Diet A parrots diet consists of many things that they eat, many people think they eat only seeds and that's not the case at all. They require a well balanced diet just like us. don't be shy when it comes to vegetables & fruit. If your parrot doesn't seem to like them, keep offering them for at least a month or so. Eventually they may start munching on the veggies or fruit. Don't let your parrot get stuck on liking just one or two favorite things, the more you can get them to like the better off they will be health wise. A varied diet largely made up of live foods will give you the healthiest bird. Diet. Some nuts are more fattening to certain birds and not to other birds.
Wash fruit or veggies well and use a clean area to prepare fruit or veggies. If I think food items are spoiled then I don't use them for my parrots, I would not want my bird to get sick :
Vegetables my parrots love celery, anything green leafy vegetable, i sometime slightly boil potatoes and yam or sweet potatoes and sometimes carrots, eggs, slightly boiled means example boiled eggs you boil on high for only till it bubbles the cover and shut the stove for 15 minutes this is an excellent way to keep the nutrients.Carrots, string beans, corn, squash, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, my parrots love tomatoes, bell pepper zucchini, snow peas, sunflower sprouts, pea shoots, sprouted seeds and beans (excellent for protein) potatoes, yam or sweet potatoes no eggplant.
Fruits: Fruits Apples, Pears, Grapes, Berries, Melon family, Oranges all exotic fruits (mango, papaya etc. one quick note: take the seeds of Apple and Pear the are deadly for them. Most any fruit is good for them, if they like it and will eat it then they will get a wide variety. Parrots tend to have their favorite food items just like people do.
Food People Food: Pasta, Quinoa, whole wheat breads, cuscus, rice and beans bits of very well cooked chicken, and various other "people foods" are fine as long as they are not the majority of the diet.
Seeds: Sunflower seeds are very fattening to parrots. Give a seed mix to your parrots maybe 2-3 times a week, they seem to always prefer it over pellets and other things, they tend to pick out their favorite items in the seed mix which are sometimes not the more nutritional part in the mix. They may leave behind the better and more nutritionally part behind and you may be dumping it out, you can not make them eat what they leave behind unless that all there is and some parrots will starve to death before they will eat something that they don't like. This can vary from bird to bird, what one bird will eat the other may not.
Pellets: There are many pellet types on the market. I personally us ZUPREEM. To name a couple of others there are Kaytee plain, Exact Rainbow pellets, Zupreem, Harrison's brands. There are other brands on the market besides these ones that I mentioned. Birds should still have other things in their diet besides pellets. Birds that are not use to eating pellets have to be converted on to them and at first may not like them but keep on offering them as you give them less and less of whatever else you have been giving them.
Eggs are good for them excellent source of calcium, boiled or anyway you will eat with no salt of course Cuttlebone very good calcium source, place a whole cuttlebone in the cage or break them in bit size I prefer grinding them and sprinkle on the fruits and vegetables Chicken, chicken bone and red meat my parrots love them make sure they are well cooked and do not leave the food in the cage more then 1 hour
PRECAUTION Don't feed the bird food from your mouth and don't bite off a piece for them. There's too much bacteria in your mouth and you can make your bird sick. Keep away from salts take the seeds of Apple and Pear the are deadly for them No Eggplant
Junk Food: Parrots seem to love junk food but is bad for them A tiny crumb from a muffins, cookie, or other fatty baked goods, French fries once in awhile might be okay, but don't get your parrot use to these treats. You want to encourage them to eat the best foods. Sugar in general is not good for parrots as it can cause hyperactivity .
DO NOT give Chocolate, cocoa, coffee, and tea is deadly for them, which can cause over excitability, cardiopathy, and death. Absolutely positively do NOT give your bird wine, beer, or other alcoholic beverages. Birds have died from too much alcohol. ---------------------------------------------------------
Topic 3 - FIRST AID FOR AN EXOTIC PARROT
What should you watch for as "abnormal" behavior?
Respiratory distress of any kind, difficulty breathing. Lack of appetite. You may notice food untouched or clean water that normally is used to soak food in. He has a "puffy" appearance. He sits hunched on his perch or goes to the bottom of the cage and does not perch and his feathers appear fluffy, not smooth. He's quiet, not talking or calling. You may see runny droppings or lack of droppings in the cage bottom.
Suggestions If you see above put your bird in a warm place with seed and water . Then have your bird checked with a vet. Always take your bird in a BIRD SAFE CARRIER or a card board box.
DEFORMED BEAKS These deformities are due not to accidents or inherited defects, but to one factor: calcium and/or Vitamin D deficiency. It results in a deformed beak. Sadly, these deformities are not noticed by us.
Suggestions: cuttle bones, eggs with shell and vitamins
TEFLON FUMES ARE POISONOUS TO BIRDS
Suggestions: Teflon fumes comes from non-stick pots and pans, please avoid non-stick pots and pans if not keep your bird far away from the kitchen.
BROKEN NAIL: Apply common flour or cornstarch or wet black pepper and apply pressure until the bleeding stops.
BROKEN FEATHER: Apply common flour or cornstarch to the feather shaft watch if the bleeding stop if not rush the bird to a vet
BROKEN LEG: Rush to vet Sprained leg Take the perches of the cage, place a towel bottom of the cage, place food and water bottom of the cage then watch note: when you take the bird out to play do not let fly or walk too much on the leg.

Topic 10 - UN WEANED Babies
To buy an UN WEANED (who cannot eat by itself) baby parrot, this is a very touchy topic for me and lots of my colleagues(friends), personally I do not agree and I do not sell UN WEANED babies at all to anyone.
We must put the interest of our baby parrot first. The two most vulnerable times in a baby's life are at hatching and at weaning.
People think that hand feeding and weaning is the same thing but it is not. Hand feeding is you feeding the baby with a syringe every 3 hours a day depending on old the baby is. Weaning is when the baby starts trying to eat by himself but you still keep feeding him to make sure he is getting his nutrition till the baby will start to eat by himself (weaned).
People think that by hand feeding the baby parrot he will be bonded to us, bonding is something which occurs slowly, bonding with a parrot depends on the friendship that develops, not who holds the syringe. Hand feeding is very rewarding, but it is an art that requires time and care from the hand feeder.
Most of the time the customers are not given written instructions or even a hand feeding demonstration, they are told that hand feeding is very easy and nothing goes wrong.
However, inexperienced hand feeders are not able to recognize problems before serious damage occurs or even death, you will often find bacterial and yeast infections, crop burns, crop stasis, and many other problems; but the worst of all to find is a perfectly healthy baby that died of starvation because the amount to feed and the number of times a day to feed was not available to the new hand feeder.

This is an issue which exists and people do not talk about it, I think this is the main issue for pluck feathers in our beautiful parrots.
All parrots will get hormonal at times especially in summer and between the ages of 5 to 12 years, during this time there will be 1 to 2 years This is a normal natural process. in which they will be very aggressive.
Once they go through this, they generally settle down with little or no aggression shown when they are not hormonal and some aggression when they are.
